Course Components
The AMI 12-18 Montessori Diploma Course is an intensive modular course designed to help students study the psychology and methodology of the Montessori approach to adolescent education. The course is spread over twelve months and will help prepare students for working with adolescents from 12-18 years using an approach rooted in the core principles of Dr. Montessori.
The Course is composed of the following components:
Theory Lectures and Seminars
The theory lectures will offer the students the opportunity to examine human development from birth to adulthood. Special consideration is given to the formative years of adolescence which herald a period of great change. The importance of the role of the environment and the adults is studied along with Dr. Montessori’s Educational Syllabus. Seminars will be introduced to read and discuss Dr. Montessori’s texts.
Methodology Lectures and Presentations
The methodology lectures and presentations will offer the students the opportunity to understand why and how to implement the theory of Dr. Montessori’s core principles for this age group.
Supervised Practice (4 weeks residential)
Students are required to spend four weeks in a residential adolescent community environment. During this period, they are introduced to the experiences of adolescent life with regards to study, work, self-expression, production and exchange, and the importance of social and moral development. Activities include individual, small group and whole community presentations. Both academic and practical experiences are introduced to understand the importance of collaboration between the work of the head and the hands in building intelligence and personality.
Care of the Environment
Students will also be asked to take responsibility for the environment of the Training Centre in preparation for supporting the adolescents in daily life. This will also form an important part of the Supervised Practice.
Practicum (4 weeks’ minimum in a 12-18 environment)
Students will be required to spend a minimum of four weeks with adolescents in a prepared Montessori environment. They will be required to design and implement a Plan of Study and Work under the guidance of a trained AMI 12-18 adult. The requirements are: 6 hours (0-3), 6 hours (3-6), 18 hours 6-12 (or 9 hours 6-9 and 9 hours 9-12), 40 hours in each of two different 12-18 environments.
